Dutch1Boy's Full Review: Norwegian Pearl/ NCL
I just returned from a one week cruise onboard Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Pearl.
As a cruise travel specialist at Cruise Holidays of Chicago (http://www.yourcruiseholidays.com), I am fortunate to travel on a lot of ships. And contrary to an experience I had on NCL's Pride of Aloha, I really enjoyed my cruise this time. Let me tell you why:
Norwegian Pearl is a newer ship, built in 2006, and part of Norwegian's Jewel-class of ships. These ships offer lots of the "Freestyle Cruising" features that NCL is famous for: there are no set dining times, you don't have to sit at the same table every night, and that frees up a large part of your day. You will hear the somewhat over-used term "You're free to do... whatever!" many times during your vacation.
Design-wise, the ship is well layed out, feels comfortable and new. The color scheme is a bit over the top (was the designer color blind?) Our balcony stateroom incorporated green, red, orange, blue - just a little vibrant... The room was very comfortable though, with some of the best beds I've slept in on a cruise ship. The bathroom was a regular size for a cruise ship, but the shower cabin felt a bit more spacious and the toilet even had a frosted glass door to close it off from the rest of the bathroom.
On the Norwegian Pearl, you can choose from 12 different restaurants, including two main dining rooms, a steakhouse (Cagney's), French (Le Bistro), Japanese (Teppanyaki), Mexican/Spanish (Mambos), Italian (La Cucina), etc. Four of those are free (the main dining rooms that serve the same menu, but are set in a different location and design). The other restaurants charge a service fee of $10 to $25 per person.
I personally found the meal experience in the main dining rooms a bit hit or miss. Some dishes were very nice, but some disappointed. In general, I thought the main dining room food was uninspired. In the specialty restaurants, the service and settings were much nicer: luxury linens, beautiful china in some. The food was good (but not great) in most, although the menu items were rather predictable for each type of restaurant and seemed to focus on the most popular and well-known dishes for each style of cuisine.
