Mike Shanahan had the strong support of Broncos owner Pat Bowlen for many years since
won consecutive Super Bowls with John Elway as his quarterback a decade ago.
The Denver Broncos squandered a three-game lead in the AFC West with three games to play and missed the playoffs by losing in lopsided fashion Sunday night in San Diego to finish the season with a record of 8-8.
Regardless of that, and the 52-21 loss to the Chargers that ended Denver's season Sunday, this was a shocker: The ousting of a 14-year coaching veteran who won two Super Bowl titles for Denver and was considered my many in this town to be a lifer.
Still, we have to admit that we're a little shocked, as we try to process the news that Mike Shanahan and the Broncos have agreed to "part ways," as owner Pat Bowlen put it in a statement just issued on the team's site.
There's a press conference slated for 11 a.m. tomorrow morning at Dove Valley, after which Shanahan, who coached the team for fourteen seasons, will reportedly address the media.
